The cottage is in the conservation area of Kirkby Stephen, a thriving historic market town. Kirkby Stephen has shops, cafes, pubs - everything you need within easy walking distance (200 yards) of the house. Kirkby Stephen is on the Coast to Coast footpath and regularly wins 'best large village' prizes in local and national 'best-kept' competitions.
Built in the 19th century, the house was once the village sweet shop. It was converted to a residence in the early 1990s.
The River Eden and open countryside are also a short walk from the cottage. Within easy reach are the unspoilt Eden Valley, the Settle to Carlisle railway and many lovely walks in the Howgill Fells or the North Pennines. The Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales national parks are within easy reach - about 40 minutes by car to Ullswater, 25 minutes to the northern reaches of the Yorkshire Dales NP.
This cottage has 1 double room, 1 twin and 1 single bedroom so sleeps five comfortably. There is a fully fitted bathroom with a shower over the bath. The fitted kitchen is well equipped and has a large pine dining table. The lounge has plenty of space to relax after your days enjoying the beautiful countryside.
But don't take our word for it! Here's a comment from soemone who has stayed at The Old Sweet Shop - 'Clean and tidy, very spacious and comfortable. Ideally situated for town, shops and restaurants. Very good quality food in local shops' [Mrs D, Nottingham, October 2011]
And even more recently: 'we had a great week, your cottage is lovely and was everything and more than I had hoped for. Many thanks for the use of the cottage, it is also perfect location for what we wanted too. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to visit the Yorkshire Dales.' [Mr L, Humberside, April 2012]
Kirkby Stephen is one of only 70 'Walkers are Welcome' towns and villages - places which have something special to offer walkers. There is no shortage of parking for your car. The cottage has a yard which does take a car, but most guests prefer to park on-street within 30 yards of the house. There are no yellow lines or parking meters!
